Create Your One Stop Virtual Business Card with DooID

Create Your One-Stop Virtual Business Card with DooID
MUO

Create Your One-Stop Virtual Business Card with DooID
<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/dooidlogo.png" /> If you're one of the growing number of people throughout the world whose business and work are primarily done through your website and social networks, you might be interested in a recently released beta web application -- DooID.com [No Longer Available], which enables you to create your personal virtual business card that links your contacts and potential clients to your business and other networking websites. DooID.com is similar to the portal website, , but it has its own unique features. Setting up a personal DooID page/virtual business card is fairly easy, and it offers a nice range of customizing tools for both its free and pro accounts.
Menu Bar &amp Business Data
The best way to set up your DooID page (after registering for your account) is to work down the DooID menu bar or tabs -- providing your profile data, web services, layout style, and add-ons. In setting up your profile, you get the option to make some data private. However, your private information can be accessed by a password, which visitors to your site can request via a popup window, or by you sending the password directly. Another nice feature is that you can set the language for your page, for English, Español, or Deutsch.
Layout and Style
For the free account option, DooID.com offers three page layouts options. You can customize the style of these pages, including changing the title fonts and wallpaper, and colors for text, background, links, and title. You can also upload and use a photo background (see final screen shot in this article).
Sharing
As you might expect, DooID.com provides a very easy and quick way to share your DooId page via various social networking sites, as well your unique URL. Click the DooID Quickshare button at the bottom of your page.
Add Ons
You can also include additional data to your page such as a map, video bio, and an email signature (these are the free account options). The Video Bio feature is a great add-on allowing you to talk directly to your potential clients and contacts. Check out our MakeUseOf article, "," for tips on producing a video bio. At any time during the layout process, you can preview your page to see how it will look in its public release. All the changes and additions you make, update very smoothly in a few seconds.
V-Card
Another unique feature is that visitors to your page can download your pertinent information in a V-card format, which can be added to their computer address book.
View Page
You will no doubt want to spend some quality time customizing and tweaking your page. What's great about DooID.com is that, like , you don't need to know a bit of CSS or HTML code in order to build your page. All that is done for you in background. With a DooID page, you're providing a lot more information about you and your services that can"˜t possibly be printed on a traditional card. And unlike your business card, you can update your virtual business card anytime you want. So what do you think? Is this a service you would use? If you get a chance to create your own DooID page, please come back and share it with us on MakeUseOf.

Create a Google Custom Search Engine for Your Research

Create a Google Custom Search Engine for Your Research

Create a Google Custom Search Engine for Your Research
MUO

Create a Google Custom Search Engine for Your Research
No matter what topic you are interested in, Google can only go so far in providing you with the search results that you need. You have to remember that Google is searching through the entire Internet in order to offer you relevant results about your unique topic. The more unique or specialized the topic, the more difficult it is for Google to identify useful sites. However, within every subject there are usually giant repositories of information - directories or portals where you can find volumes of valuable information about what you're interested in. Just take a look at your own bookmarks, collected after a few years of exploring the web. Do relevant pages from your favorite sites always come up in Google? The answer is no. Even if a website features thousands of pages of information related to a topic you're interested in, if that site isn't perfectly situated or optimized for Google to find it, then it may never even show up in your normal Google search results at all. However, for years Google has offered the ability for website owners to utilize a Google custom search engine on their own site. That isn't news - third party apps have been doing this all along, like Groovle or Search All Craigslist. What is news is the fact that you can make use of the to build your own topical search engine from the ground up. And, if you have friends who are also interested in the same subject, you can make the search engine a collaborative effort.
Create A Google Custom Search Engine In Three Steps
For years, bloggers and website owners have tossed Google's custom search engine on their sites with the default "full web" enabled and simply used the on-site search field to produce revenue. However, this tool is so much more useful than that. You can completely transform the CSE into your own personal research tool. Even better - you can offer that research tool to your readers. The three step process is fast - just make sure you have your own web page somewhere where you can embed your final search engine. The important part is "Sites to search." This is where your specialized knowledge of the subject matter comes into play. Put all of those directories, websites and portals you've accumulated into this field. In my case, I've stockpiled Freedom Of Information Act reading room sites - and I'm loading up my specialized search engine with those directories. You can pretty much customize the search field and results to look however you like, right down to modifying link and text colors, the colors for search controls and everything else (even fonts!) That's it for the basic setup. You now have the start of a specialized search engine that uses Google's superior website search capabilities combined with your inside knowledge of the best websites for this topic area. You'll notice at the bottom, there's a whole lot more you can do with this customized search engine. I'll get to a few of those features below. Here is what my customized search engine looks like on my site. The results are returned right on the page. The free CSE requires Google ads at the top of results, but for a yearly fee you can remove those. As you can see from the results, the information gathered doesn't include erroneous results. In my case, I wanted to only search official documents, and that's exactly what Google has done - returning results that are crawled from those pages only. No garbage, spam sites or erroneous data. The real power of this tool comes out when you start digging into the settings. You can go into the "Sites" section of the control panel and keep adding more resources - building the strength of your search engine as you discover and save new, relevant sites. You can also enable the "Promotions" feature, which triggers stand-out listings at the top of the results when people type in certain keywords. So, if there's a new section of your site about "sports cars" that you really want to promote - you can have your own page at the top for that keyword (or keywords). The Synonyms feature is also an excellent way to strengthen your customized search engine even more by adding similar words that have the same meaning. In many industries or subjects, there is a certain terminology that Google can't possibly know. By customizing the synonyms search, you'll strengthen the power of your search engine even further. Then of course, there's the awesome collaboration section. Just enter in an email and a message to your friends how share your common interests, and invite them to join with you in strengthening your search engine with their own research and insight. You can have up to 100 collaborators building your engine with you. In time, your CSE will become known throughout your specific industry or online community as being a valuable resource that returns much better results than the standard Google search engine. A custom search engine is a really powerful and useful tool that you can offer to your visitors to make your website even more valuable. Have you ever played around with the Google Custom Search Engine? Did you find that it's effective? Share your insight in the comments section below.

Create Groups Of Portable Apps Using Cameyo Windows

Create Groups Of Portable Apps Using Cameyo Windows

Create Groups Of Portable Apps Using Cameyo Windows
MUO

Create Groups Of Portable Apps Using Cameyo Windows
<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/00-Microsoft-Thumb.jpg"> We all have favorite applications that we use all the time. The question is, what should we do when we use another computer where those applications are not installed? The choices are to either use the available alternatives, install our favorite apps (if possible), or wait until we can use our own computer at home. Plus what about the times when we have to re-install our favourite OS? What will happen to our favorite apps then? We have to re-install them one by one. It would be nice if we could pack everything up in one , so those apps will always be available whenever we need them - in any possible scenario. Mac users don't have any problem with this particular issue because basically all Mac apps are portable. But things work differently in the Windows world. Luckily, there's a portable applications creator called .
Application Virtualization
Cameyo calls itself "Application Virtualization" and what it does is turn ordinary Windows applications (or groups of applications) into one independent executable package that can be run from any Windows machine. In other words, a portable application. To be able to do that, Cameyo requires you, the user, to go through the real installation process of the application that you want to transform into a portable app. Cameyo will gather data from the installation to know the required components to build the portable app. But before you install other apps, you have to install Cameyo first. Then open Cameyo, and you will see two options: "Capture Installation" and "Edit Existing Package". Choose the first one to create a portable app. If you've done this before, you'll have the list of your portable apps on the right pane and you can use "Edit existing package" to modify them. Cameyo will take a snapshot of your system prior to the installation of the soon-to-be portable app. This process could take a while depending on how "messy" your system is and how powerful the hardware is. After the preliminary snapshot, Cameyo will give you the safe signal to proceed with the installation of the app. Install the application(s) that you want to turn into a portable app. As an example, I used one of my favorite games: . Then after the installation, go back to the small "Proceed with installation" window and click the "Install done" button. But if you want to build a package that consist of several applications, you should go and install other apps before clicking that button. Cameyo will take another snapshot of your system. Please be warned though that this one will be longer than the first one - a lot longer. During my experiment, it took so long that I thought the process was a failure. I restarted everything just to find out that this "speedy snapshot process" was normal. This so-called "Post Installation Snapshot" will be compared with the first snapshot taken before installation and the comparison will be analyzed to find the differences in the system. As the logic goes, these differences are the required components needed to run the application. Cameyo will put them together along with the "real" executable of the app and build a standalone portable app. That's why it's advisable that you quit any running applications and stop all other activities on your computer before going through with the process of building portable apps so that the detected changes in the snapshots are purely from the installation process of the apps.
Building The Portable
After the long wait, Cameyo will continue with the building process. The "Main executable" window will appear. You'll have to edit/confirm several things before clicking the "OK" button: the name of the (portable) app, the location to save the app, and which executable is the main exe to run every time this package is opened. From the example below, the one that we should choose as the main exe is "launcher.exe". Click "OK" and Cameyo will start building your portable app. You'll have the "Success" window afterward, along with the summary of the saved location. Congratulations! You've just built your portable app. Back up the folder to be used later and/or copy it onto a USB drive if you want to run the app on another Windows system. After playing around with the Cameyo portable applications creator for a short while, I can say that there's still large room for improvement - especially in the snapshot department. My experiment was a success but some of my friends reported that there are some applications that don't go along well with Cameyo. Why not take Cameyo for a ride and tell us the results using the comments section below? Image credit:

Create Survive Fight In The Online Game Minecraft

Create Survive Fight In The Online Game Minecraft

Create Survive & Fight In The Online Game Minecraft
MUO

Create Survive & Fight In The Online Game Minecraft
<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/minecraft-copy.png"> is a unique game that can't easily fit into one genre. It's sort of a first-person creation game "” the main draw is that you can shape the world by building and destroying blocks. But the game also includes a survival mode and a multiplayer mode, and there are plans to include still more types of gameplay in the future. Minecraft is unique in other ways, too. Its graphics are simple but have a cute blocky look, and a huge world is randomly generated each time you start a new game. It's a refreshingly original game that's just fun to play around with. All of the game modes described below can be played for free, but they are also old versions of the game. To play the latest versions, you will have to . It's pretty cheap as long as you buy it before the game enters into beta, but you might as well try out the free older versions first to see if you like it.
Controls
Minecraft has very simple controls. As in most first-person games, you control your movement with the WASD keys and you look and aim with your mouse. Left-click destroys blocks that you aim at and right-click builds new blocks. You can use your mouse wheel to scroll through a partial inventory, and you can press B to access your whole inventory. In survival mode, pressing tab fires arrows, and in multiplayer mode, pressing T lets you type a message to other players.
Single-Player Creation Mode
In single-player creation mode, you can spend hours building up whatever your heart desires. Build yourself a quaint little home, an entire city, or Mario. You have an infinite number of blocks to build with and no enemies to worry about, so just let your creativity flow.
Single-Player Survival Mode
more closely resembles a traditional video game because it has enemies and you can shoot arrows at them. But what makes this more unique than your typical first-person shooter is that you still have the block-building and destroying abilities from creation mode, which can be used strategically to create strongholds and defend yourself. A major difference, however, is that you don't start with an infinite number of blocks to build with; you have to add blocks to your inventory by destroying other blocks. You also have to hold down your left mouse button for a bit in order to destroy blocks. All of this goes toward making survival mode a more methodical game that requires strategic thinking when choosing to spend time destroying or building blocks. Note that this is an old version of survival mode and that you will encounter many glitches. For one, when you die you'll just receive an error message, and you'll have to refresh the page to start a new game. To play the latest version of survival mode, which fixes a lot of the glitches and includes many additional features, you will have to purchase Minecraft.
Multiplayer Creation Mode
Register an account for free and join a multiplayer mode server for a whole new kind of fun. It's amazing to see how quickly a world changes as everyone works on their own creations; you can come back to a server just hours later and marvel at how different it is, or you can actively make your own changes and work around others' creations. The possibilities here are endless. Working on creations together for several hours can result in truly monumental and unbelievable buildings. On the other hand, things can also get pretty chaotic, especially if griefers join the server and just start destroying things at random. In either case, the interactive multiplayer component adds a whole new and exciting layer to the game.
The Future Of Minecraft
Minecraft is still very much in development; the free version isn't even considered alpha. If you purchase the alpha version now, you will receive all future updates "” including the beta version and the completed game "” for free. The developer plans to eventually include, among many other updates, a multiplayer survival mode, a capture the flag mode, and a zombie siege mode in which you must build up your defenses during the day and fight off the enemy during the night (or maybe hide in a corner and hold on for dear life). Share some of your own Minecraft creations in the comments! Image Credit :

Create A Professional DJ Party Mix With OTS Turntables

Create A Professional DJ Party Mix With OTS Turntables

Create A Professional DJ Party Mix With OTS Turntables
MUO

Create A Professional DJ Party Mix With OTS Turntables
Whether you're trying to create a mix of audio tracks to burn to CD as a gift for someone, or you want to put together a cool stream of awesome songs with professional DJ fading, scratches and other effects, it isn't always easy to find high quality DJ mixing software for free. Jeffry described how you can put together a party iTunes playlist with , and a couple of cool free apps that you can use to mix up tunes. All of these apps are great, but they don't provide that DJ look and feel - wouldn't it be cool to download a virtual DJ studio you can run on your laptop that gives you a couple of turntables and lets you perform realtime effects on the music as it plays? Enter , a very cool, free DJ app that not only gives you the ability to create a playlist of music with professional fading and effects, but it lets you have a little fun with the music as it plays, rotating the turntable for that track and scratching it up a bit - or performing a variety of other effects that would keep the party fluid and high-energy.
Your Own DJ Turntables
The best part of this application is the awesome design. The skin makes it feel like you've got your own personal mixing board right in front of you - complete with two turntables, an equalizer, processor, digital effects and much more. It offers the level of mixing features that you'd only expect with paid software. The bottom of the window is where you load in all of your tracks in the order that you would want them to play. They won't necessarily play automatically unless you enable the Auto DJ feature. Otherwise, you can drag any of the tracks in this window onto one of the two turntables. Then, you can play one or both of those tracks, adding effects as they play if you want to. You can load in tracks from anywhere, whether it's a folder or an audio CD. Once you've loaded the track onto your turntable, you can use any of the effects on the turntable to alter just that track, while the other turntable remains unaffected by those changes. These include changing the pitch, tempo or the direction of play (yes, you can play the track in reverse at high speed if you want to). In the center of the turntables, you'll find the volume controls where you can perform any form of fading that you like. When you click on the "FX" button under the turntable, you'll find different ways that you can alter the playback of that track. Most of the effects are different scratch techniques that you can record and then utilize for any track that you're playing. When you click on the devices that make up your DJ mixer board, a pop-up window opens so that you can modify your overall output sound however you like. Another cool feature of OTS Turntables is the fact that there are preset settings for different "themes" you may be looking for. For example, click on "Bass Boost" and the Equalizer automatically configures to maximize the low frequency end of the range for each channel. The same goes for the "Dynamics Processor," where you can alter each of the settings to get just the sound that you're looking for. Or click on one of the theme buttons at the bottom, such as DJ, Lounge or Party - and the settings all adjust to the levels that you need. Best of all, you aren't tied down to performing your amazing feats of special music effects during the party itself. If you want to perform your magic and record it for the fun later, you can do so by clicking on the program icon in the upper right corner and clicking on "Output Configuration." Here, you can set up any output device that you may want to feed your music to (such as an amp or some other hardware), or you can feed the entire mix that you're creating to an output wave file, which you can then burn to an audio CD, or convert to an MP3 and post it online (just be careful with copyrights!). Overall, OTS Turntables is one of the most functional and high quality free DJ mixing apps that I've seen yet. So download a virtual DJ studio for yourself, give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments section below! Create And Explore Alien Planets Outer Space With exoExplorer

Create And Explore Alien Planets Outer Space With exoExplorer

Create And Explore Alien Planets & Outer Space With exoExplorer
MUO

Create And Explore Alien Planets & Outer Space With exoExplorer
<firstimage="https://www.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/exoExplorericon1.jpg" /> The term "exo" throughout many different branches of science has come to mean the speculative exploration of what forms science may take "outside" of the boundaries of earth. There are exo-biologists, exo-archaeologists and even ex-musicology (I kid you not). Some of these speculative theories are pretty interesting, especially when exploring what forms life on distant planets could possibly take - a bacteria, a colony of mutant ants, or humans just like us? With the exploration of distant, alien worlds in mind, software developer Tom Morris, of the Division of Natural Sciences at Fullerton College, developed one of the most impressive simulations I've seen called . Here at MakeUseOf, we've covered a number of cool exploration apps like this, including and . There was also Jorge's review of Stellarium, which lets you explore the night sky. But exoExplorer picks up where Stellarium leaves off - and actually lets you explore those alien planets with your own exploration vehicle. I should note that getting the software to run well without crashing depends heavily upon the graphical capabilities of your video card, and how you've configured the graphics to run on your PC. If you have a powerful computer with a high-end video card, you have nothing to worry about. However, if you're running on a modest or average PC or laptop, consider reducing the resolution and colors so that it runs without crashing.
Setting Up The exoExplorer Planetary Simulator
Setting up the software is a lot faster and easier than you might expect for such advanced simulation software. The first step is to choose the graphics rendering engine that will work best for your system. If you find that one seems to crash often, give the other engine a shot. Once you do select the rendering subsystem, you can tweak the parameters so that it'll run more smoothly on your system. In my case, running on my laptop with an average graphics card, I decided to reduce the resolution to 800 x 600 and turn off full-screen mode.
Exploring The Universe From Your Computer
Once the software launches, you will be blown away by the depth of detail that has been put into this 3D simulation software. The first thing that struck me was the existing library of planets in the database. Each planet has its own atmospheric and terrain makeup, size, orbit, moon makeup and more. You can see the entire simulated planetary system in the center window - and your planned itinerary for your voyage is laid out in the left "Voyage Itinerary Bar." As you select each planet from the extensive database listing at the bottom of the window, and then add it to your itinerary, the star, the planet and its orbit is highlighted in blue within the grid system in the center pane. On the right side of the screen, you can review the current properties for that planet. You have the option to modify that planet's properties if you wish - and create an entirely new "exoPlanet" to explore. Change the terrain, moon properties and more. Of course, my favorite part of this software is the top pane called the "Leg Surface Bar." The "leg" is the leg of your voyage. In this pane, you can use the control keys (A,W,S,D or the arrow keys) to drive your exploration vehicle across the surface of the planet. A word of warning - don't turn to sharp or you'll flip it over! If you click on the "Voyage Leg Orbit Bar" you can have a look at the layout of the planet's orbit. The blue path represents the path of the planet's orbit, and the red line is the radius. If you get bored with the current terrain and scenery, just tweak the terrain and moon properties, and change your vehicle to a Hummer, and start racing around a landscape filled with a lava surface. The stars in the sky above, the huge moon or sun that comes into view in the sky as you turn, and the rolling hills and valleys of the planet really turn this simulation into a fun and relaxing experience. While there is a certain scientific aspect to this software, in that it was created as a theoretical way to correlate a planet's properties with what it may be like to explore that planet, it is also filled with some cool features that make it like a simulation game in it's own right. The project page portrays that you can select a small airplane as an exploration vehicle, but I wasn't able to get that feature working (would love it if any readers could tell me how!) Overall, is a great way to let your imagination come alive and see what it would be like to drive across alien landscapes. So install the software, fire up your Hummer, and head out on your voyage!

Create Your Own Wiki Site Easily With WetPaint
MUO

Create Your Own Wiki Site Easily With WetPaint
Have you ever wanted to create your own wiki site? Maybe something like but on a smaller scale? Hmm....maybe I should start this article off with the definition of what a wiki is: According to Wikipedia : A wiki is a collection of designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified . Wikis are often used to create and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia is one of the best-known wikis. "Wiki" () is originally a word for "fast". It has been suggested that "wiki" means "What I Know Is". However, this is a . "Wiki Wiki" is a of the same word. Now why would you want to create your own wiki? How about a central repository to update information on a specific subject. Let's take a real world example. Say you are an international spy organization and you know that your secrets will be safe on the interwebs :) So you create a wiki and allow all your spies to login and update information on targets, weapons, gadgets and all things spy-related. Ok, it's not secure and no spy organization in the world is going to use this but you can use it for your next project, party or just for the fluck of it. A while ago MakeUseOf had a story on . The article recommends MediaWiki which is a popular open source Wiki software. It's an excellent alternative who want to install a wiki website on their own domain name. The only thing, you need to have some experience with alike tools and be comfortable with modifying config. files. On the other hand, if you're looking for something simple and straightforward then you can go on over to the WetPaint [Broken URL Removed] web site and sign up. Start by hitting this big green 'go!' button on their home page. Once you hit the button you will be on your way to setting up your account and having your wiki built for you. Check out the three easy steps. In the first step we will pick our wiki's name, URL and tell WetPaint a little bit about your wiki's personality. Then you need to tell Wetpaint who can edit your wiki - registered users, ANYONE (Including the anonymous trolls) or only specific people you choose. Next we should choose a style for your wiki. There are a bunch more than the few below. There are actually 3 pages of 9 styles.: After choosing the style, you get to brand your top banner. You can opt to leave it as is and this is what it looks like by default. You can upload a custom graphic or point to one on the web. Once all that is out of the way it is time to get your WIKI on! Are you ready? Are you excited?? No? Well what if I said I already set up one at and YOU can go ahead and edit and play with it to your hearts content! I have opened up edits to anyone and everyone - now go have some fun and play around with it :). Post links to your wetpaint wiki's for us to check out as well. Leave us some notes in the comments on how much you love or hate this service. Do you use something similar? Put us on!

Create Stylised High Contrast Black White Masterpieces In Photoshop With Adobe Camera RAW

Create Stylised High Contrast Black White Masterpieces In Photoshop With Adobe Camera RAW

Create Stylised High Contrast Black & White Masterpieces In Photoshop With Adobe Camera RAW
MUO

Create Stylised High Contrast Black & White Masterpieces In Photoshop With Adobe Camera RAW
As you may have realised, creating striking black and white images with takes a little more than checking the "Convert to Greyscale" box. There are to optimize your monotone masterpieces, and this particular technique is my favourite for creating high contrast black and white images. You can complete the process within the interface, which means RAW files work best. If you've got a hard drive full of JPEGs then hope is not lost, provided you're running Photoshop CS3 or above. First thing's first - decide whether you're using a photo from RAW or JPEG, and take a good one. RAW files are uncompressed images, and contain all the data that a camera sensor naturally captures. You can adjust simple settings like exposure, white balance and contrast with ease in Photoshop. As JPEGs are a compressed file format, then data is inevitably lost in the compression process. This makes JPEGs a weaker candidate for post processing. Personally I can't help shooting RAW all the time now, just in case. If you wish to use and process JPEGs using Adobe's Camera RAW tool then you'll need to fire up Bridge, navigate to your chosen images and right click the file you would like and choose Open in Camera RAW. If you're using a RAW file, open in it Photoshop and you'll see Adobe Camera RAW with an image preview and a box full of sliders. You can use this technique on just about any photo, but it will work better on some than others. I've chosen a picture of a classic race car I took a few years ago. The original file is a RAW, and pretty ordinary looking. The first thing to do is desaturate the image. Under the HSL/Greyscale tab check the Convert to Greyscale tick box. Photoshop will present you with a fairly flat looking black and white image, and a number of colour sliders. Now for the fun bit! Go back to the first Basic tab and slide the Blacks all the way up to something like 70. Watch as your image loses much of its familiarity and resembles a couple of black blobs with a few really bright white bits. Seeing as this is a high contrast conversion technique, I usually double the contrast to somewhere around +50, though this is relative to the image you are using and the look you're after. Next we'll be bringing back some of that lovely detail the Blacks tab removed. This part will vary on each image you process, so remember to play around at this stage. Move the Fill Light slider gradually higher until you reach your desired level of detail. Not too much, as lastly you'll want to bring the Blacks down from 70 to something a little more normal. There's a fine balance between the right amount of Fill Light and Blacks, so experiment to see what looks good. For my image, I reduced the Blacks to 52 and increased the Fill Light to 56. Finally, you'll want to fine tune your colours. Switch to the HSL/Greyscale tab and uncheck Adobe Camera RAW's Preview box in the top right of the window. Take note of the main colours within the image, and enable the Preview again. Tweak each colour's appearance using its corresponding slider, deciding whether you want dark or light shades. The race car photo featured a light blue sky, green car and a reddish bin in the background. To intensify the sky, I reduced the Blue slider to -70 to make it very dark. I also reduced the green car to -48, and made the bin less noticeable by sliding the reds down to -40. There really is no right or wrong way of doing this and it's all down to your personal taste. Finally I used the Graduated Filter tool to darken the edges by -1.5 EV. This is a great technique for drawing the eye into the image as well as hiding unwanted foreground, and provides a less linear effect than adding an artificial vignette. Once you're happy with your image, head back to the Basic tab to make a couple of last minute touch-ups. To finish off, I increased the exposure by +0.6 EV as I felt it was still a little dark. There you have it, an image with a lot more impact. You will find that the technique will differ depending on the image, so play around and see what you come up with. Don't be afraid to lose some detail, black and white conversion allows you to fine-tune and pick out the best bits. Good luck! Have you tried this technique? Do you have another way of converting your black and whites? Add a comment and let us know!
