PRESENTED BY ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 7 Michigan tallied goals from Madisson Lewis and Taylor Timko, as the Wolverines earned a 2-0 season-opening win against Cal State Northridge on Friday at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines wasted no time notching the first goal of the 2014 season, as Lewis put the ball in the back of the net just 6:12 into the first half to give Michigan the early lead. A corner kick from Ani Sarkisian was cleared out of the box, but Corinne Harris dropped the ball back to Sarkisian, who played the ball back in from about 20 yards out. Lewis redirected Sarkisian's ball from the left side into the right side of the net off a header. CSUN was on the attack for much of the first half and had its fair share of chances at the net, registering five shots, but couldn't get passed goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin. The second half was filled with plenty of action, as Michigan ripped seven shots and CSUN recorded five of its own. Diving saves by Bucklin and Madator keeper Cynthia Tafoya kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the Wolverines. CSUN's Tafoya made the save, but was unable to secure the ball and Timko was there to clean up the rebound from about five yards out. Timko's insurance goal came at 78:33, and the Wolverines remained in control the rest of the match to secure the 2-0 victory. Bucklin played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves, en route to her first shutout of 2014 and 13th of her career. The Wolverines continue their home-opening weekend when they welcome Bowling Green on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tilt.
